Hoy traspasamos las fronteras nacionales para indagar más sobre una figura muy interesante en la escena electrónica Europea. Hemos ‘viajado’ hasta Bélgica para charlar con Charissa Cools conocida musicalmente como AM.I, una de las mujeres más talentosas del sonido Techno del país del noroeste europeo, quien no sólo destaca por su faceta musical, si no que ofrece charlas muy sugestivas y profundas. Con una trayectoria que va camino de la década, AM.I navega entre un particular estilo Techno donde la frescura y los tintes melódicos son bien recibidos creando capas atmosféricas magistrales que invitan al oyente a evadirse de la realidad y sólo pensar en bailar y disfrutar del momento.
Con actuaciones en festivales de prestigio como Tomorrowland, lanzamientos muy destacados como su reciente The Aftermath y con un estudio propio de grabación y producción en Amberes que fue inaugurado hace un año, AM.I ha ido creciendo traspasando todo tipo de barreras, por ello que hayamos querido conocer más sobre ella, su proyecto musical y su opinión de la escena en esta encantadora entrevista que os invitamos a leer. ¿Cuáles son tus planes para la próxima temporada de verano 2024?
Muchos 😀 Tengo un par de shows en Bélgica y en el extranjero, por lo que estoy muy feliz de traer nueva música al público. Aparte de las actuaciones, por supuesto tengo algunos lanzamientos en camino y el estudio está lleno de música y amor de mis entrenadores. Estaré creando nuevas colaboraciones en lo que respecta al estudio, para el espacio de alquiler y producciones. Así que, ¡sí! ¡Emocionante!
What are you planning for the next summer season?
· A lot 😀 I have a couple of gigs in Belgium and abroad, so happy to be bringing some new music to the crowd. Aside from the gigs, I have some releases of course and the studio is full of music and love from my coaches. I’ll be building up some new collabs when it comes to the studio, for the rental space and studio productions themselves. So yeah! Exciting!

Hace pocos días salía a la luz tu nuevo trabajo ‘The Aftermath’ a través de Apex Music. ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre este lanzamiento y su proceso creativo?
Estos temas fueron mis primeras creaciones en el nuevo estudio, así que definitivamente hubo un nuevo proceso de producción. Las canciones suenan como el cierre de un tiempo anterior y el inicio de una nueva era. Me encantó producirlos, ya que este nuevo espacio seguro es increíble. Utilicé muchos sonidos y plugins nuevos y empecé a experimentar mucho con el efecto estéreo de la habitación.
Few days ago your new release ‘The Aftermath’ went out on Apex Music. What can you tell us about the release and its creative process?
· The tracks were my first tracks in the new studio, so there definitely was a new kind of producing. The tracks sound like the closing of a previous time and beginning of a new era. I loved producing them, as this new safe space is amazing. I used a lot of new plugins and sounds and starting experimenting a lot with the stereo effect of a room.

En febrero también editaste tu EP ‘Distorted Life’ en el label MJA The Vision. ¿Cómo valoras la acogida y repercusión del mismo?
¡Cliff Jack es increíble! Y yo estaba en un completo ‘aaww’ cuando empezaron a lanzar el EP. El equipo sabe exactamente lo que hace y la difusión del EP fue brutal!. En los clubes tuve muchas reacciones increíbles por parte de otros artistas. Creo que MJA tiene un enorme potencial de crecimiento y será un sello muy conocido en el futuro. Están muy involucrados con el artista y colaborar con mi equipo fue algo sensacional.
You also released your EP ‘Distorted Life’ with the label MJA The Vision in February. How do you rate the reception and impact?
· Cliff Jack is amazing! And I was in utter ‘aaww’ when they starting to release the EP. The team knows exactly what they’re doing and the spreading of the EP was wild! I had so many amazing reactions in the clubs from other artists. I think MJA has huge growing potential and will be a very well-known label in the future. They are so involved with the artist and collaboration with my team was amazing.

¿En qué lanzamientos y/o proyectos trabajas actualmente?
El próximo lanzamiento será en julio, en uno de mis sellos favoritos. Me dirigiré al estudio en busca de nuevo material y producciones después de mis vacaciones en mayo. Me he tomado un pequeño descanso en la producción porque necesitaba crecer y rejuvenecer después de un periodo muy intenso de creación en este primer año del nuevo estudio. Pero puedo deciros que a partir del tercer trimestre de 2024 entraré al estudio con la cabeza fresca y nuevas colaboraciones que no podría imaginar ni en mis sueños más locos!.
What new releases or projects are you currently working on?
· So the next release is in July, on one of my favorite labels. And I’ll be heading to the studio for new material and productions after my holiday in May. I took a small break from producing myself as I needed to grow and rejuvenate after a very intense period of producing 1 year in the new studio. But, I can tell you, that starting from Q3 2024, I’ll going into the studio with a fresh head and new collaborations that I couldn’t imagine in my wildest dreams!

Hablemos un poco de Luminate Studios, un estudio de grabación y producción que creaste hace justo un año en pleno Amberes. ¿Cómo surge esta idea? ¿Qué objetivos te gustaría lograr al respecto?
Estaba buscando maneras de tener más conciertos y actuar más, pero entonces llegó el coronavirus. Sabía que si quería viajar por el mundo con mi música y publicarla en los sellos más reconocidos, necesitaba la mejor calidad que pudiese, no la calidad de mi habitación (que fue mi cuarto de producción durante más de 7 años). Pero los lanzamientos y los shows nunca van tan rápido como quisieras así que necesitaba un lugar que no solo fuera mi propio espacio, sino que también fuera un negocio. De esa idea nació Luminate Productions y ahora está cobrando vida. Me acompaña gente de toda Bélgica e incluso de países vecinos. ¡Es una locura!. No sólo productores, sino también djs, escuelas de DJ, podcasters e incluso organizadores de eventos.
Let’s talk about Luminate Studios, a recording and production studio located downtown Antwerp that you created a year ago. How did this idea come about?
· I was looking for ways to play more gigs and DJ more, but then Corona hit. And I knew if I wanted to travel the world with my music and release on the most renowned labels, I needed the best quality I could get. Not the quality from my living room (which was my producing quarter for more than 7 years). But the releases and gigs never go as fast as you want, so I needed a place that not only was my own space, it also needed to be a business. So from that idea, Luminate Productions was born. And now, it’s coming alive. People are joining me from all over Belgium and even neighboring countries. It’s insane! Not only producers, but also DJ’s, DJ schools, podcasters and even event organizers.

El Techno vive un gran momento a nivel global ¿Cómo ves la escena en el mundo?
¡Me encanta! Es increíble ver que incluso gente que nunca había oído hablar del Techno terminan en mi pista de baile y vienen a hablar conmigo después de la actuación para decirme que realmente disfrutaron de la música. Es como si tocáramos a las personas de una manera diferente, como lo hace por ejemplo el R&B o la música acústica. Creo que podemos entender globalmente que la música electrónica está devorando muchos corazones de diferentes maneras; más de lo que nosotros, como artistas, podríamos haber imaginado.
Techno is living a trendy moment worldwide. How do you see the Techno scene in the world?
· I love it! It’s so amazing to see that even people who never heard of Techno, end up on my dancefloor and come to talk to me after the gig, that they truly enjoyed the music. It’s like we’re touching people in a different way, that for example R&B or acoustic music does. I think we can globally understand, that electronic music is devouring many hearts in different ways. More than we, as artists, could’ve ever imagined.

¿Qué artistas o djs son tus mayores referentes musicales?
Nunca han cambiado: Hans Zimmer, Victor Ruiz, Alex Stein, Enrico Sangiuliano, Metodi Hristov, por nombrar algunos. Y probablemente me estoy olvidando de muchos otros.
Who are your main music references?
· They never changed: Hans Zimmer, Victor Ruiz, Alex Stein, Enrico Sangiuliano, Metodi Hristov, to name a few. And probably forgetting many of them.

Hablemos del feminismo y el papel de la mujer en el mundo musical. ¿Consideras que hay machismo en la escena electrónica? ¿Has encontrado muchas diferencias por el hecho de ser mujer?
Bueno, hay algo de sexismo. Especialmente de hombres en redes sociales. En nuestros MDs solía tener jefes de sellos más pequeños que me preguntan si produzco mi propia música. Estoy feliz de tener el estudio ahora, así ya nadie me pregunta. Una de mis clientas está construyendo la comunidad llamada »Loud Ladies» donde representa a DJs en Bélgica y tal vez algún día a nivel internacional. Quiere fortalecer la presencia de djs mujeres en clubes, fiestas y festivales y luchar por una escena justa e igualitaria. Es genial lo que enfoca: desde la igualdad salarial hasta el no acoso, e incluso un baño para las djs durante los sets. Me gusta su idea y visión.
Talking about feminism and the importance of women in the musical world, Do you have the feeling that there is sexism in the scene? Have you found several differences for being a woman?
· Well, there’s some sexism. Especially from men on social media. In our DM’s, or I used to have smaller label bosses who’d ask me if I produce my own music! Happy I have the studio now, so no one asks anymore. One of my clients, she’s building up this community called “Loud Ladies”. Where she represents DJ in Belgium and maybe international one day. She wants to strengthen the presence of female DJ’s in clubs, parties and festivals and strive for a fair and equal scene. It’s super cool on what she focusses: from equal pay to no harassment, to even a toilet for female DJ’s during sets. So I like her idea and vision.

Estos últimos años has actuado en Tomorrowland, para muchos el mayor festival de todo el mundo. ¿Qué supone para un artista belga actuar en el festival?
¡Es una locura! Incluso para alguien de Bélgica. Para los artistas, siendo una actuación tan importante, sucede como para el público con las entradas: es muy difícil conseguir una. Si eres muy visible durante el año con tu música y tu networking, es posible que tengas una oportunidad. Pero se que son muy exigentes y buscan artistas realmente buenos que lleguen a multitudes así. Se que no estaré allí todos los años, ¡pero voy a intentarlo!
You had been playing at Tomorrowland in the last few years. What does it mean for a Belgian artist?
· It’s insane! Even for someone in Belgium. As scares the tickets are, the scares and important the artist spots are. It’s very difficult to get one. If you are very visible during the year with your music and networking, you might have a shot. But I know they’re very picky and are looking for really good artists that reach a crowd like that. I know I won’t be there every year, but I’ll try!

¿A qué dedicas tu tiempo libre cuando no estás trabajando con la música? ¿Eres capaz de separar tu figura artística de la personal?
Bueno, soy un poco friki de la salud. Me encanta ir al gimnasio y pensar sobre hábitos de vida saludable. Por otro lado, también me gusta el helado. Cuando empieza la primavera, ¡lo hago todas las semanas!
And what about your hobbies? What do you usually do in your free time?
· Well, I’m small health freak. I love to go to the gym and think about healthy ways of living. Also go for icecream on the other hand. When spring starts, I’m on it every week!

Si miramos atrás, ¿Qué diferencias ves entre la AM.I de tus inicios en 2016 y la actual?
Oooh, ¡Mucho! No sólo en el aspecto técnico, sino también en el gusto. Siempre tendré bajos pesados, pero ahora es más Techno que antes.
Back to the past, what differences do you see between the AM.I at the music beginning and the current one?
· Oooh man! So much! Not only in the technical aspect, but also on taste. I’ll always have the heave basses, but it’s more Techno now than before.
Y mirando al futuro, ¿Qué sueños y objetivos te gustaría lograr en el mundo de la música?
¡Tengo muchos proyectos en mente! Algunos de ellos llegarán muy rápido, como eventos más grandes o colaboraciones para estudio, por lo que atraerán a más personas. Pero el más importante es el de alta gama viajando por el mundo. Quiero conocer gente, llevar mi música a los público más grandes y a los más pequeños. Hacer B2Bs con mis artistas favoritos y de paso, tomarme más tiempo libre mientras viajo para ver la naturaleza local y apostar por la buena comida ^^.
And looking to the future, what goals or dreams would you like to achieve with music?
· I have a lot of projects in my mind! Some of them will be there very fast like bigger events, collaborations for the studio here so it will attract more people. But the most important one is the high end travelling around the world. I want to meet people, bring my music to the biggest and smallest crowds. Do B2B’s with my favorite artists and along the way, take some more time off while traveling. To see the local nature and go for good foodies ^^

Para terminar, ¿Conoces nuestro país? ¿Te podremos ver pronto actuando en España?
¡Sí! Iré de vacaciones a Sevilla esta semana 😀 Así que me encanta la gente, me encantan las tapas e incluso hablo un poco de español. No hay shows a la vista por el momento, pero espero que lleguen muy pronto. Juntos con un poco de sol y/o un festival o una discoteca, ¡vamos a ello!. Gracias por invitarme 🙂
Finally, Do you know our country? Will we see you playing in Spain anytime soon?
· Yes! I’ll be going on a holiday to Sevilla this week 😀 So I love the people, love the tapas and I even speak a little bit Spanish. No gigs in sight at the moment, but I’m hoping very soon. Together with some sunshine and or a festival or a club. Let’s go! Thanks for having me 🙂
